Abstract
738,295. Motor vehicle driving arrangement. ROVER CO., Ltd. Oct. 12, 1953 [Oct. 21, 1952], No. 26385/52. Classes 79(2) and 79(5). [Also in Group XXXIV] In a vehicle having both the front and rear wheels c, f driven through propeller shafts g, h which are connectible by a clutch, a brake is associated with one of the shafts either directly or through the drive thereof and brake actuation effects connection of the shafts g, h. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, 1a the front and rear wheels c, f are driven through axles a, a and differential gears b, e from the propeller shafts g, h carrying sun pinions n of a further differential gear the planet carrier m. of which is driven through gearing k and a variable speed gear j from the engine i. Splined to the carrier m is a dog clutch member p adapted to engage a complementary. clutch member on the shaft g to lock the differential gear. The member p is under the control of a hand lever 5 acting through a rod 4 and an arm 2. The further differential gear can alternatively be locked conjointly with brake application under the control of a pedal z which controls a master cylinder w connected by pipes v, 6 to cylinders u, 7. The cylinder 7 contains a piston 8 operatively connected to the rod 4 and the cylinder u contains friction pads t adapted to. engage a disc a secured to the carrier m. In another embodiment, Fig. 2a, the shafts g, h are interconnected by an overrunning clutch 9 and the gearing k is connected directly to the shaft h. The shafts g, h can be positively interconnected by a dog clutch q, r and the disc s is secured to the shaft h, the dog clutch and disc being operated in the manner shown in Figs. 1 and 1a. In another embodiment, Figs. 3 and 3a (not shown), the arrangement is identical to that shown in Fig. 2a except that the overrunning clutch is omitted. In a further embodiment, Figs. 4 and 4a (not shown), the arrangement is identical to that shown in Fig. 2a except that the disc s is secured to the shaft g and the dog clutch between the shafts g, h is omitted.
