Abstract

762,651. Motor vehicles. LAMBURN, A. S. Oct. 31, 1951 [Oct. 31, 1950], No. 26490/50. Classes 79(2), 79(3) and 79(5). [Also in Group XXIV] In a vehicle the engine crankshaft 11 and change speed driving and driven shafts are disposed trahsversely, the change speed driving shaft 29 carrying three gears 39, 40, 45 and the change gear driven shaft also having three gears 41, 42, 46 and being formed by the gears being connected together to house a differential gear 59 having coaxial output shafts 67. As shown the engine crankshaft 11 has an extension 11a carrying a clutch 12 having a driven disc 15 splined to the hub of a gear 19, which meshes with a gear 27 on the end of the change speed driving shaft 29. The gears 39, 40 are adapted to be engaged with the shaft 29 by a slidable sleeve 44 and mesh with the driven gears 41, 42 the driven gear 46 being adapted to be engaged directly or through an idler 47 for reverse drive by the gear 45 slidably mounted on the shaft 29. The hub of the gear 41 receives a spindle 61 carrying bevel gears 62 of the differential gear 59, the sun gears 64 of which have their hubs rotatably mounted in the hubs of the gears 41, 46 and are splined to the shafts 67 universally jointed at 68 to final drive shafts 69, the splined engagement permitting telescopic movement for suspension purposes. The crankshaft 11 and the shafts 29, 67 are arranged in the form of a triangle as seen in end view, Fig. 1 (not shown). The hub of the gear 46 has an extension 51 to carry a brake drum 57 engageable by brake shoes 58. The engine may be arranged to drive front or rear wheels.
