[Also in Group XXXI] Both axles 11 and 12, shown diagrammatically in Fig. 3, of a tandem arrangement are driven from a shaft 33 through a differential gear 35, the half shafts 22, 23 of the forward axle 11 being driven from the differential via gears 36, 37, a pinion 27, a crown wheel 26, and a differential 25, the half shafts 14, 15 of the rear axle 12 being driven from the differential 35 through a differential 18, a crown wheel 16 and a pinion 17 and shafts 64, 19 and 34 connected by universal couplings 39,41. The front axle drive assembly, Fig. 2, comprises the input shaft 33 upon which is slidably splined a carrier 53 upon which are mounted pinions 54 which, with pinions 51, 52, comprise the differential 35, pinion 52 being splined upon a shaft 34 and the pinion 51 being rotatably mounted upon the drive-shaft 33. The pinion 52 is integral with the gear 36 which meshes with the gear 37 which, with the pinion 27, is mounted upon a shaft 58. The differential 25 is of conventional design and comprises a crown wheel 26 carrying planet pinions 29 from which sun gears 28 drive the half shafts. The pinion 51 also carries dog clutch teeth 67 which may be engaged by corresponding teeth upon a member 65 splined to the shaft 33 to lock the differential 35 so that both axles are driven at a fixed speed.
