Abstract

362,633. Motor vehicles. NORTH, O. D., 76, Elm Park Mansions, Park Walk, Chelsea, London. Nov. 15, 1930, No. 34455. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii).] Comprises a transverse internal-combustion engine 1, a transverse driving shaft 4<a> connected at one end to the engine by change-speed gearing and connected directly at its other end to the axle 3 of the driving wheels 4 by a final reduction and/or differential gear 7, the driving shaft 4<a> being between the axle and the engine, and the engine being located between the change-speed gear and the reduction or differential gear. The driving axle may be at the front or rear of the vehicle. In the construction shown in the Figure the engine drives the shaft 4<a> through a clutch 18, an epicyclic or other change-speed gear-box 16, and a two-speed chain gearing 11, 12 in series with the gear-box 16. The shaft 4<a> is driven from the final change-speed gear shaft 10 through a universal joint 9 and drives the reducing and differential gear 7 through another universal joint 5. Epicyclic or other reversing gear may be combined with the reducing gear. In a modification spur gear trains of different ratios controlled by clutches are mounted on the driven shaft of the clutch 18 and the shaft 10.
