Abstract
617,865. Motor-vehicle driving-gear. STANDARD MOTOR CO., Ltd., BLACK, SIR J. P., TURNER, W. R., and PHILLIPS, W. N. G. May 2, 1944, No. 8223. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXVII] In a front-engine motor vehicle the engine drives rearwardly through a clutch to a gearbox from which the drive can be taken to front and to rear differentials, the casing of the front differential being beneath the engine and formed integrally with and providing a part of the bottom wall of the sump or crank-case. The drive to the front differential may be optional, and when employed, the drive to both differentials may be through a reduction gear. In Fig. 2, the gear-box 14 has an output shaft 15 which has a gear 16 fast thereon and in mesh with a double gear 17, 18 mounted freely on the shaft 19. The gear 17 meshes permanently with gear 20 which is freely mounted on the shaft 21, which latter carries a universal joint connection 22 at one end for the rear propeller shaft and a splined portion 22 at its other end. Slidably mounted on the splined portion 22 is a sleeve 23, which in the position shown in full lines engages splines 24 on the gear 20 and so transmits the drive through gears 16, 17, 20, sleeve 23 to the shaft 21 and rear propeller shaft only; when the sleeve 23 is moved to the left to the position shown in dotted lines, it is driven by the gear 18 and transmits the drive to the splined member 22 and hence to the rear propeller shaft and to the splined member 25 and hence to the front propeller shaft 26, the drive between gears 18 and 23 providing a lower ratio than that between gears 17 and 20. The drive passes to the front wheels via propeller shaft 26, Fig. 1, and differential 31 which is located in its own casing 34 disposed within the sump 35, 36, whereby the lubricant used for the differential does not mix with the engine oil.
