Abstract

887,849. Motor vehicle driving gear. MORRIS MOTORS Ltd. Nov. 9, 1960 [Sept. 22, 1959], No. 32177/59. Classes 79(2) and 79(3). In a vehicle; in which the front wheels 5 are driven through universally-jointed axle shafts 6 from a power unit disposed at the front of the vehicle and comprising an engine 1, change speed gear 2 and differential 3, provision is made for selectively coupling the output member of the change speed gear to a second differential gear 19 through which the rear wheels 20 may also be driven. A crown wheel 10 fixed to the cage of differential 3 drives a rearwardly extending shaft 12 through a pinion 11. The rearwardly extending propeller shaft 18 is coupled to a shaft 14 to which is splined in sliding engagement a dog clutch element 16 which may be brought into engagement with a flange 17 on the shaft 12 by a control lever (not shown). The front wheel drive shafts incorporate rubberised Hooke type couplings 7, sliding joints 8 and constant velocity universal joints 9. Specification 808,807 is referred to.
