Abstract

Clutches, arrangements of; driving steering-wheels; change-speed gearing; transmission gear of invariable ratio.- Relates to transmission gear of the kind in which an axle drive such as a differential gear is located between the engine and the clutch, and comprises an arrangement in which the clutch mechanism and the axle drive mechanism are formed as a detachabLe unit. Where a change-speed gear is employed this is combined with the clutch and the axle gear to form a single detachable unit. The arrangement ma.v be used to drive the front wheels of a vehicle, and a second engine may be provided on that side of the clutch remote from the axle. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the engine crank-shaft 1 is formed with an extension 5 passing through a hollow worm shaft 6 and a changespeed gear shaft 7 to the driving member 13 of a clutch, the driven member 14 being fixed on the gear shaft 7 which drives differential gear through the change-speed gear shown, the hollow shaft 6, and worm gear 24. The worm gear and the differential are carried by plates 27, 28 connected together by ribs 29 and forming an extension of the change-speed gear box 30. This extension fits within an extension 33 of the crank-case 4 and is bolted to it at 32, so that when the bolts are removed the clutch, change-speed gear and axle drive can be withdrawn as a unit. Lubricant may be supplied to the gear-box under pressure through a duct 38 in the lay-shaft 21, passing through a hole 40 into the casing 33, and through a filter 41 into the crank-case. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the crank-case of a second engine 44 is bolted to the clutch extension 35 of the gear-box, and the crank-shaft of this engine is coupled to the extension shaft 5 of the first engine.
