Abstract

Class 7(2) [Also in Group XXXI] A driving arrangement for a motor vehicle having a longitudinally disposed engine in which the drive is transmitted through a clutch to a gear cluster which is coaxial with the engine crank-shaft and which constitutes the input shaft of the change-speed gear, the gear cluster being in constant mesh with mainshaft gears selectively engageable with the mainshaft through slidable syncromesh coupling means; the mainshaft being geared to an output shaft disposed parallel to, and spaced sufficiently from, the input shaft to enable the output shaft to clear the engine flywheel; a final drive bevel pinion on the output shaft driving the crown wheel of a differential gear assembly which is situated at the opposite side of the flywheel to the changespeed gearing and which, through universallyjointed drive-shafts, drives the road wheels at that end of the vehicle at which the engine is located. The engine 1 may be disposed at the front or rear of the vehicle and the drive from its crank-shaft 2 is transmitted through a friction clutch 3 to a coaxial shaft 4 of a gear cluster integral with or secured to a first speed gear 5 and a second speed gear 6 and which carries a third and fourth speed synchronizing unit 7 and its associated gears 8 and 9, either of which may be coupled to the shaft 4 according to the direction in which the unit 7 is moved, and which are in constant mesh with gears 10 and 11 fixed to a mainshaft 12. The latter carries a loose gear 13 in constant mesh with the gear 6 and which may be coupled to the shaft 12 by a slidable syncromesh 14 upon which is slidably mounted a gear 14A which may be coupled with the gear 5. The gear 11 meshes with a gear 15 secured to an output shaft 16 parallel to the shaft 4 and clearing the periphery of the flywheel 17. A final drive bevel 18 on the output shaft 16 drives the crown wheel 19 of the differential gear 20 which is on the opposite side of the flywheel 17 to the change speed gearing and which drives the road wheels through universally jointed shafts 21 and 22. The reversegear comprises a gear 23 integral with a hollow shaft 24 mounted on a fixed shaft 25 and a gear 26 slidable on splines 27 on the shaft 24, the gear 23, shown out of place, being in constant mesh with gear 5. For reverse drive, gear 26 engages gear 14A with the latter, being in the position shown, the unit 7 being in neutral and the gears 8 and 9 idling, the drive being through gears 5 and 23, splines 27 and gears 26, and 14A to the mainshaft. In top gear, the drive from input shaft 4 is through gear 9 and unit 7 to gears 11 and 15. For third gear, the drive is through unit 7 and gears 8 and 10, shaft 12 and gears 11 and 15. In second gear, the drive from shaft 4 is through gears 6 and 13, shaft 12 and gears 11 and 15. In first gear, the drive is-through gear 5, gear 14A shaft 12 and gears 11 and 15.
