[Class 79 (ii)] A power take-off from a motor vehicle gearbox comprises a pair of toothed wheels of the same diameter and rigid with a shaft which can be moved axially to bring the first toothed wheel into mesh with a gear-box wheel and the second into mesh with a gear on the take-off shaft, or moved axially in the opposite direction to bring the second toothed wheel into mesh with the gear-box.wheel and the first into mesh with a gear on an intermediate shaft which shaft carries a further gear in mesh with a gear on the take-off shaft. Fig. 2 shows an existing gear box C with the power take-off contained in a housing B bolted thereto. Fig. 1 is a 'section on the line 1-1 of Fig. 2, the lower shaft e' of Fig. 2 being displaced to the right for clarity. The pair of gears f<1>, f<2> can be moved on the shaft f in the opposite direction to the arrow whereby gear f<1> engages with the third speed wheel H on the gear-box layshaft and gear f<2> engages gear D splined to the power take-off shaft A carrying a coupling a. By moving the pair of gears f<1>, f<2> in the direction of the arrow gear f<2> engages with gear H and gear f<1> engages gear e<2> which is integral with sleeve E and gear e whereby the drive is transmitted to gear D and the take-off shaft in a reverse direction and at a reduced speed. Provision may be made for coupling to one or both ends of the take-off shaft A, and an engine-speed governor may be driven from one end of such shaft. The gears are so spaced that gears f<1> or f<2> engage the gear H before they engage gears D or e<2>.
