Abstract

426,063. Three-wheeled motor vehicles. NORTH, O. D., 76, Elm Park Mansions, Park Walk, Chelsea, HUGH, P. G., and SCAMMELL LORRIES, Ltd., 52, High Holborn, both in London. Oct. 30, 1933, No. 30089. [Classes 79 (ii), 79 (iii), 79 (iv), and 79 (v)] A three - wheeled motor vehicle having two trailing wheels and a combined driving and steering wheel with the power unit mounted alongside and swivelling with the steering and driving wheel is characterized in that the power is transmitted through the axis of the wheel to a change-speed gearing mounted upon the opposite side of the wheel and through which the drive is transmitted to the wheel. The wheel may be driven by an internal-combustion engine or an electric motor. In the construction shown the driving and steering wheel 1 is mounted on a steering frame 2 which swivels about a steering shaft 8 supported in the steering head 3 fixed to the main frame (not shown). The main frame is supported on the steering frame 2 by rubber or other shockabsorbing means, the shaft 8 being slidable in bearings 6, 7 on the frame 2. The wheel 1 is steered by means of a hand wheel 10, chain or cable gear 13 and a wheel 15 or lever fixed to the steering frame. An internal-combustion engine 16 is secured to the steering frame and drives the road wheel through epicyclic or other change-speed gear and one or two trains of epicyclic or other reducing gear. The clutch housing 19 of the engine has a stationary fixed tubular extension 20 secured thereto, this extension passing centrally through the wheel hub 29 which is mounted thereon on bearings 30, 31. A gear casing 17, 28 is fixed to a flange 24 of the extension 20 by bolts 25. The clutch shaft 37 passes through the extension 20 and drives a concentric tubular shaft 40 through three-speed and reversing gearing comprising constant-mesh gearing 39, 44, lay shaft 43, a sliding pair of constant-mesh double helical gears 45, 46, and the usual gears 48-50. The tubular shaft 40 drives a sleeve 56 through a non-epicyclic reducing train comprising a pinion 53, pinions 53<a> revolving on the fixed bolts 25, and an internally-toothed ring 54. The sleeve 56 drives the road wheel hub through an epicyclic reducing train comprising a pinion 57, planet pinions 58, and a fixed toothed ring 61. The planet pinions are mounted on pins 59 of a carrier 62 which drives comprising rubber or other bushes 63 mounted in the hub and engaged by pins 64 on the planet carrier. The wheel rim 33 is detachablymounted on the hub 32 and is of such a size that it can be passed over the gear-box 17, 28, the gear lever 18 being readily detachable. According to the Provisional Specification, the steering frame 2 may be forked, one arm of the fork being hinged or readily-detachable to permit the wheel to be changed.
