Abstract

Change-speed and reversing gearing. - The engine and change-speed gear form a readily-detachable unit, being carried by plates 2 secured to a pressed or welded cross member 3 which is bolted to the vehicle frame. Fixed on the engine-shaft are two chain or gear-wheels 7, 8 driving corresponding wheels which are loose on a lower shaft 11 but are adapted to be clutched thereto, thus giving two speeds. The shaft 11 is carried by the member 3 and drives the rear wheel or wheels through a universallyjointed shaft 14, bevel reversing-gear 18, and belt or chain gearing 21. In the case of a four-wheeled vehicle, the reversing gear may be on the back axle or on a countershaft.
