Abstract

575,022. Variable speed gearing. BOMFORD & EVERSHED, Ltd., and BOMFORD, D. R. June 5, 1944, No. 10742. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXI] A variable speed and reversing gear for slowmoving vehicles, such as rollers or tractors in which the engine is disposed transversely in the frame, comprises a plurality of different size sprockets 8, 8a, 8b, on the engine shaft 6a, any one of which drives a chain 9 according to the speed ratio desired. The chain 9 drives sprockets 10, 11 on transverse counter-shafts 12, 13 respectively in opposite directions and is tensioned by a jockey sprocket 17 on a pivoted arm 18. The shafts 12, 13 carry freely running sprockets 21, 22 which can be clutched to their respective shafts to provide a forward or reverse drive to the road wheels 31, through either chain 23 or 24 to sprocket 25 on a transverse shaft 27 which gears through pinion 32 to spur wheel 33 fixed to the road wheel axle. The gear ratio desired must be selected by shifting the chain whilst the vehicle is stationary, but the change from forward to reverse or vice versa can be effected whilst the engine is running by suitable clutch devices (not shown) on the counter-shafts 12, 13.
