803,713. Vehicle driving and steering gear. PETROVITCH, M. March 22, 1956 [March 23, 1955(2)], No. 6982/56. Class 79(2) A transmission system for an endlesstrack vehicle comprises two half-shafts 16l and 16r drivingly connected to the track driving wheels 21l and 21r on respective sides of the vehicle, a differential gear D connecting the half-shafts and consisting of coaxial pinions 17l 17r, mounted on each shaft respectively and meshing with planetary pinions 18, 18 rotatably mounted in a carrier 15, means operalbe at will to transmit the drive from the vehicle engine 1 to the carrier of the differential gear, and second means operable at will to hold the carrier stationary and transmit the drive to one of the half-shafts 16r and thus to rotate the other half-shaft 16l in the opposite direction so as to pivotally turn the vehicle, one of the means comprising an epicyclic gear. In an embodiment, the drive from an engine 1 is transmitted by a gearbox G and bevel gears 32, 33 to a hollow shaft 11 through which passes the half-shaft 16r. The sun pinions 12s, 13s of two epicyclic gears 12, 13 are mounted on respective ends of the shaft 11, and the driven carriers 12c, 13c of the epicyclic gears are connected respectively to the carrier 15 of the differential gear D and to the half-shaft 16r. Forward and reverse motion is obtained by holding'the gear 12 stationary by the brake 12b. For turning the vehicle about its central axis, the differential carrier 15 is held stationary by the brake 20, and the drive is transmitted to the half-shaft 16r by holding the gear 13 stationary by the brake 13b. Other embodiments are described in which an epicyclic change-speed gearbox or a constant-mesh change-speed gearbox is constructed to lie about one of the halfshafts 16l or 16r. A clutch may be used in place of one of the epicyclic gears. Independently operable brakes 25l, 25r are provided on the driving wheels 21l, 21r to enable the vehicle to turn whilst in forward or reverse motion.
