Feb. 28, 1918. variable-speed toothed gearing.-In threespeed gearing for motor-cycles &c., there are three pairs of toothed wheels always in mesh mounted in two shafts b, c, one wheel b<2>, i being fixed on each shaft and the others loose thereon. Changes of speed are effected by sliding the middle pair I, m together, this pair being provided with grooved to engage splines on the shafts and with dogs to engage similar dogs on the other loose pinions e, k. The sliding pair are moved by a fork q operated by a hand-lever through a spring arm or link and a shaft s. The engine-driven chain-wheel b<1> is fixed on the shaft b, and the road wheel is driven by a chain from a sprocket h fixed to the toothed wheel e.
