[Class 6 (iii)] In a mowing-machine of the type wherein the cutting-mechanism is driven from the ground wheels through transmission mechanism associated with and driven by the ground wheel axle, the transmission mechanism is enclosed in an oil-tight casing and includes a driving chain or chains and sprockets in place of the whole or part of the usual spur gearing. Pawl-carriers 4, 5 on the inner ends of the axle pieces 1, 2 drive a main spur wheel 6 which meshes with a pinion 9 on a non- rotary counter-shaft 10 mounted in the forward part of the oil-tight casing 3. A flange 15 on the hub of pinion 9 has a clutch face engaging a complementary clutch face on a sprocket structure loosely carried on an extension of the hub. The clutch faces are pressed against one another by a spring 22 and are movable away from one another by moving the shaft 10 axially by means of a lever. The sprocket structure comprises two unequal sprockets 19, 20 aligned with two equal sprockets 27, 28 on a rear non-rotary countershaft 23. The sprockets 27, 28 are connected to a bevel gear wheel 29 engaging a pinion 30 on the crank shaft 31 which drives the cutter. A chain 32 may be shifted from one pair of sprockets to the other to change the driving speed. The housing 3 has a cover and is adapted to hold lubricant. In a modification, the main spur wheel 6 is replaced by a sprocket wheel which, through a chain, drives a sleeve mounted on an inner sleeve on the forward countershaft. The inner sleeve is movable axially with the countershaft against the action of a spring and is driven from the outer sleeve by a key connection.. A flange on one end of it has a clutch face engaging with a complementary clutch face on a sprocket connected by a chain with a sprocket on the rear countershaft. A second pair of sprockets may be provided to allow of change of speed. The clutch arrangement of the modification may be used alternatively with the arrangement shown in the Figure.
