Abstract

548,941. Motor vehicle driving arrangements. KOEVORT, L. A. Jan. 22,1941, No. 848. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIV] In a motor vehicle having a transverse engine which drives road wheels through a transverse change-speed gear coaxial with the wheels, reduction gearing and a clutch, the reduction gearing and the clutch are formed by an epicyclic gear. As shown in Fig. 1 the engine crankshaft 1 is arranged forwardly or rearwardly of the wheel axles 2, 3 and drives axles through gear wheels 5, 6 or through a chain and sprockets. The gear wheel 6 is carried by an intermediate shaft 4 which may carry the engine valve cams and carries the driving gear wheels 8 of a three-forward and one-reverse change-speed gear, the driven gears of which are carried by a tubular shaft 7 on the axle 3, a reversing idler 9 being carried by a separate shaft. The shaft 7 carries the sun gear e of the epicyclic gear, the planet gears d of which are carried by a disc a rotatably mounted on the shaft 7 and the annulus f of which is fixed to the differential gear cage 11. Cooperating with the disc a is a friction band b which is engaged therewith by spring means and disengaged by a pedal. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown) the engine drives the differential gear cage through a three-forward and one-reverse changespeed gear formed by a series of epicyclic gears coaxial with the wheel axles, the epicyclic gears being provided with independently operable friction bands and direct-drive dog clutches.
