Abstract

442,256. Motor-vehicle driving-gear. AUTO UNION AKT.-GES., 110, Scheffelstrasse, Chemnitz, Germany. March 6, 1935, No. 7065. Convention date, March 6, 1934. [Class 79 (ii)] In a vehicle having the engine on one side of the driving axle and the change-speed gear at the other side, the gear wheels on the engine shaft are all fixed thereto and one or more of these wheels is or are constantly in engagement with one or more gear-wheels loosely mounted on the driven shaft of the change-speed gear which drives the differential gear preferably through bevel gearing. The engine and the driving axle may be either at the front or the rear of the vehicle. In the construction shown, the engine is at the rear of the rear axle and drives the axle differential gear 1 through gear shafts 2, 7 and bevel gearing 8. The gear-wheels 3-6 are all fixed on the shaft 2, gear-wheels 11, 13 are loose on the shaft 7 and are in constant mesh with the gears 6, 3, and other gears 9, 12 splined on the shaft 7 are separately slidable on the shaft so as either to engage the gears 4, 5 or to clutch the gears 13, 11 to shaft 7. The top gear 3, 13 has a considerable step-up ratio. The second and third gears, which are most used in traffic, are obtained by sliding the gear 12 to-and-fro, this being effected by a simple rocking movement of the gear-lever.
