Abstract

441,141. Variable - speed gearing. HERBERT, SIR A., LLOYD, A. H., and HARRISON, H. T., c/o Herbert, Ltd., Canal Road, Edgwick, Coventry. July 14, 1934, No. 20678. [Class 80 (ii)] Change-speed gearing for lathes and other machine tools, controlled preselectively by means described in Specification 382,784, includes one or more one-way clutches 17 in lower speeds, which overrun when higher speeds are engaged, thereby increasing the ratios available with a given number of clutches. Double friction clutches 15, 23 selectively clutch loose wheels 13, 14 and 21, 22 respectively to a driven shaft 12 and an intermediate shaft 18, the wheels 13; 14 gearing with fast wheels 19, 20 on the shaft 18. The loose wheel 22 meshes a wheel 25 fixed to a driving shaft 26, whilst the loose wheel 21 is connected thereto either directly by a splined wheel 27, or through a reverse idler comprising a pinion 29 (shown out of place), permanently meshing with the wheel 21, and a pinion 28, adapted to be meshed by the sliding splined wheel 27. Connected for sliding movement with the reversing wheel 27 is a wheel 24 splined on the shaft 18 and meshing with a wheel 16, connected by the one-way clutch 17 with the driven shaft 12, the wheel 24 being moved out of mesh in reverse. The arrangement provides six forward and two reverse speeds, the two additional forward speeds being through the one-way clutch 17 by use of the clutch 23, the clutch 15 being in neutral. Three additional forward speeds, making nine in all, may, as shown, be provided by a second one-way clutch 32, between the shaft 18 and a loose wheel 31, meshing, in forward drive only, with a driving pinion 30 integral with the pinion 27. These additional speeds are provided by using the clutch 15, the clutch 23 being in neutral. Additional speeds may be provided by the use of an additional intermediate shaft, with or without one-way clutches, or selectively driven through pairs of " crash " gears.
