Abstract
370,624. Variable-speed toothed gearing. STANDARD MOTOR CO., Ltd. and MAUDSLAY, R. W., Standard Motor Works, Canley, Coventry. March 20, 1931, No. 8588. [Class 80 (ii).] Relates to countershaft four-speed variablespeed gearing for motor vehicles &c. of the kind in which a constantly rotating lay-shaft 7 drives a third gear wheel 9 loose on the driven shaft 3 and in which a pair of wheels 17, 18 splined to the shaft 3 carry two end clutches 13, 14 for direct drive and third speed, respectively, a wheel 23 splined to the shaft 7 being engaged with the wheel 18 for first speed and carrying a clutch 24 engageable with a secondspeed wheel 20 loose on the shaft 7, which wheel constantly meshes and slides with the wheel 17. According to the invention, the wheel 23 is locked at the middle of its movement, so as to avoid clashing with other wheels, except when it is moved to effect first and second speed drives. The wheels 5, 6, 8, 9 are preferably helical. The wheels 17, 20 are preferably double-helical so that they slide together without additional interconnection, but they may be single helical or spur. For reverse, a long wheel 26 constantly meshing with the wheel 23 is moved to engage the wheel 18.
