Abstract

333,201. Seidel, A. April 29, 1929. Variable-speed gearing for vehicles comprises an over.driving train of gears 7, 9, 10, 8 which is moved bodily along with a clutch sleeve 3 to change between direct and over drives, and may be used as a self-contained unit, as shown in Fig. 1, for use in series with a change-speed gear, or may be incorporated in a countershaft changespeed gear, as shown in Fig. 7. The two-speed gear shown in Fig. 1 is in position for yielding direct drive, the clutch teeth 5 on sleeve 3 engageing like teeth 6 on the end of the driving-shaft 1. Helical silent gearing is preferably used. The sleeve 3 drives shaft 2 to which it is splined, and the toothed gearing is at rest. Gears 9, 10 are loose on countershaft 11. To change to overdrive, rod 21 is moved to the right of Fig. 1 and upwards of Fig. 3, whereby a female cone surface 19<1> within gear 7 engages a cone surface 19 on sleeve 3. The gearing is thus set rotating, whereby clutch teeth 16 within gear 7 are enabled to engage outwardly-projecting clutch teeth 6, and also clutch teeth 4<1> within gear 8 are enabled to engage rotating clutch teeth 4 on shaft 2, which is thus accelerated. In Fig. 3, 21<1>, 21<2> arethe control rods for the main change-speed gear, and 12 is a gate in which works a control lever. In order to reach position S for the overdrive, the control lever must pass from position D1, the direct drive in the main gearing, to position D2, the direct drive for the auxiliary gearing. Positions L are neutral. The form of clutch teeth is best shown in Fig. 7; the inclined ends of the faster-running teeth 5 ratchet over the slowerrunning teeth 6 until engagement is possible. The overdrive is passed through a clutch 4<1>, 4. Reduced and reversed drives are obtained through the gears 87, 88, 97, 101 and an idler (not shown). A form of incorporated gear is described in which the gears of the overdriving train are long enough to allow the countershaft gears 9, 10 not to slide, while the clutch gears 7, 8 and sleeve 3 slide relatively to them.
