Variable-speed toothed gearing comprises clutches movable together in pairs, one of each pair sliding on a countershaft 14, Fig. 1, and the other upon a driving-shaft 12 or driven shaft 13, the whole being operated by a sliding cam bar 37, Figs. 2 and 3. Gears 26, 39, 45, 58, 70 loose on the shaft 14 mesh respectively with gears 21, 38, 44 loose on the shaft 12, and with gears 54, 68 loose on the shaft 13, the pair 70, 68 being connected through an idler 74 for reversing,. Helical teeth are preferably employed. A double clutch 33 between the gears 21, 38 and a like clutch 34 between the gears 26, 39 are -operated together by a transverse spindle 30. A double clutch 52 between the gear 44 and a clutch 17 on the shaft 13 for direct driving is operated together with a single clutch 53 beside the gear 45 by a like spindle 48. Other double clutches 66, 67 a.re operated by a third spindle 62. Cranks 30<a>, 49, 63 on the spindles 30. 48, 62 engage. grooves 76. 77, 78 in the bar 37, which is slid longitudinally.
