Abstract

495,568. Variable-speed gearing. VINCENT, P. C., CLARKE, G. A. E., CLARKE, W., and WALKER, F. E. April 12, 1937, No. 10429. [Class 80 (ii)] A change-speed gear comprises driving and driven shafts, one or more intermediate shafts, a number of driving trains each comprising driving members independently loose on the driving, driven, and intermediate shafts, the driving members of each train being in constant driving connection, and means for selectively clutching any of the driving members to the shafts carrying them. As shown, the gear comprises a driving shaft 30, a driven shaft 33, and intermediate shafts 31, 32. Each shaft carries three chain sprockets loose thereon and the sprockets are connected by chains 40, 44, 48, the arrangement of the sprockets 34, 37, 38, 39 and chain 40 being shown in Fig. 1 and. the gear being shown in extended form in Fig. 2. Clutch members 57 for connecting the sprockets to their shafts are actuated by striker arms 61 on sliding rods, each having a right-angled end 63 engaging a slot 80 in one of the cam discs 70 ... 77 on a shaft 65. The cam disc 70, Fig. 4, is shown as an example. The shaft 65 is turned by means of a handle 66 into twenty-seven positions giving different gear ratios, the positions being indicated by the numerals 1 ... 27 in Fig. 4. Instead of chain gearing, pulleys and driving belts or intermeshing toothed gearing may be employed, idler gears being included in the gear trains if necessary. A friction drive may be provided to ensure that the intermediate shafts are in constant rotation, or the clutch members may be provided with friction surfaces coming into engagement before the clutch teeth engage. The Provisional Specification describes also a four-speed gear in which driving, driven and intermediate shafts each carry two pulleys or gear-wheels and the pulleys or wheels on the intermediate shaft are fixed; one of the pulleys or wheels on either the driving or driven shaft may be omitted to provide a two-speed gear.
