Abstract

183,218. Boult, W. S. April 15, 1921. Variable-speed gearing comprises a set of three or more toothed wheels on one shaft adapted to be nested so that each wheel such as 18, Fig. 1, when moved axially into engagement with its mating wheel 22 encloses and occupies the same plane as the next smaller wheel 19 of the same set. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1. there is one nesting set of gears 18, 19, 20, each of these being moved one step to the right to become operative. A direct drive between driving and driven shafts 10, 11 is effected by a clutch 25, and the sliding gear pairs transmit power from a countershaft 12 to the shaft 11, an idler train 31 being provided for reversed driving. Modifications are described, of which one is shown in Fig. 2. In this arrangement, two nesting groups 33, 36, 37 and 39, 40, 41 co-operate with one another; each gear is in sliding engage. ment with the teeth of the gear within it.
