Abstract

261,394. Casassa, A. Nov. 11, 1925, [Convention date]. Variable - speed gearing suitable for vehicles yields four forward ratios from six constant mesh gears 3 - - 8, Fig. 1. The drive may pass through the middle pair 4 to 7 or 7 to 4. The gears 6,7,8 fast on countershaft 11 mesh respectively with gears 3, 4 loose on a driven hollow shaft 10 and with a gear 5 loose on the driving-shaft 9, which passes through from end to end. Double clutches 1, 2 are slidably splined on driven shaft 10 and driving-shaft 9. When these clutches are slid together to engage the sides of gear 4, there is one-to-one drive. Reduced speeds are effected by the following trains respectively, 5, 8, 6, 3 and 4, 7, 6, 3 and 5, 8, 7, 4. A cam plate 17, Fig. 2, has projecting ridges 21, 22 engaging the clutches 1, 2, the ridges so shaped as to bring in the speeds insuccession as the plate 17 is moved transversely in guides 19. Reversed driving is effected by sliding the loose gear 5 to the right of Fig. 1. It first picks up a spline 9<1> on the shaft 9 and then an idler 8" making connection with a gear 8<1> fast on the shaft 11. There are two reversed speeds corresponding to the two engaged positions of the driven clutch 1.
