Abstract
285,520. Tinkler, A. Sept. 21, 1926. Variable-speed gearing comprises driving and driven shafts 50, 50a, the former of which has secured thereto a wheel 56 in constant mesh with a wheel 57 on a lay shaft 51. The shaft 50<a> carries a loose wheel 58, and another slidably splined wheel 59. The shaft 51 also carries a pair of combined wheels 62, 63 slidable on the shaft and provided with cavities for engaging dogs 65 on the shaft. Gear changes are effected by sliding selector members 70, 71, which engage cam grooves 67, 68 on a drum 66 actuated by rack-an-pinion gearing 72 from a control lever 75. For low speed, the drive is as shown, through wheels 56, 57, 63, 58. For second speed, the wheels 62, 63 are first moved to disengage the dogs 65, and then the wheel 59 is slid to disengage dogs 60 thereon from the wheel 58, the wheels 62, 63 being at the same time moved back to re-engage the dogs 65,. so that the drive is effected through wheels 56, 57, 62, 59. For top speed, the wheel 59 is slid until its dogs 60 engage the wheel 56 for direct drive, the wheels 62, 63 being also moved out of engagement with the dogs 65.
