324,778. Kr³ger, W. Dec. 24, 1928. Variable-speed gearing.-A is arranged within the same casing as auxiliary gearing B provided to facilitate changing speed. The first shaft 25 of gearing B is connected by a chain &c. 34 to a friction clutch member 26 loose on driving- shaft 9 of main gearing. The second shaft 16 of gearing B is constantly connected by gear train 14 to the driven shaft 1 of main gearing. If, for example, it is proposed to enmesh the main gear pair 5, 2, the engine clutch 11 is disengaged by moving cone 10 to the right. This carries cone 27 into engagement with cone 26 so that shaft 25 of gear B is geared to the countershaft 7 of the main gearing. Clutch 31 is engaged. Gear pair 19, 23 corresponds to pair 5, 2 so that vehicle road wheels drive from shaft 1 through train 14, 16, 19, 23, 25, 34, 26, 8, 28. Teeth of gear 5 are then moving at the same speed as teeth of gear 2 and the latter may be slid into mesh without shock-
