Abstract

287,234. Millar, H. A. Dec. 17, 1926. Variable-speed epicyclic gearing suitable for vehicles comprises stepped planets 14, 15 meshing with sun gears 12, 13 respectively fast on driving and driven shafts 10, 11 and supported in a carrier 17 which may be driven from the shaft 10 by a variable friction train so as to increase the speed of the shaft 11. A definite minimum forward speed is obtained by holding the carrier 17 by a brake 30. The friction auxiliary gearing comprises a splined shaft 20 upon which a roller 21 is slid over a friction surface 23 on the carrier 17 The roller 21 may be operated by a hand striker 22, or, as shown, by a governor 33 driven from the driven shaft 11. When reversed driving is required, the roller 21 is moved clear of the disc 23 against a spring 60, and the carrier 17 is driven from the driven shaft through a train 24, 25, 27, 29. The gear 27 is disconnectible by sliding out of mesh, or by a clutch. Modifications comprising different arrangements of the disc-and-roller gear and the governor are described, the former always driven from the driving-shaft, and the latter from the driven shaft.
