Abstract

427,754. Variable speed gearing. BRIAN, F. C., 2a, Keppoch Street, Cardiff. Nov. 7, 1933, No. 30861. [Class 80 (ii)] Variable-speed gearing in which the speed variations are effected automatically to suit the load by slip in a suitable slip clutch D, L<3> comprises two intergeared epicyclic trains P, Q on different shafts. The driving-shaft X carries the carrier H of stepped planet gears J, J<1> of the train P, and is connected by a train A, B, C and a sleeve to the sun gear C<1> of the train Q, which gear C<1> is loose on a lay shaft Y. The annulus F of the train Q is geared by a pair F<1>, G to a sun gear G<1> of the train P. The driven element of the gearing, a sleeve L<1> loose on the shaft Y, is geared by a pair L, K<1> to the other sun gear K of the train P, and carries splined upon it a sleeve L<2> carrying a clutch disc L3. The disc L<3> is thrust by a spring M into slipping engagement with a friction clutch ring D which is loose on the shaft Y and carries the planet gears E of the train Q. There is no manual control and slip in the clutch D, L<3> adjusts the ratio of the whole device to the load on the sleeve L<1>.
