Abstract

301,742. Casara, G. Dec. 3, 1927, [Convention date]. Variable-speed gearing comprises a main epicyclic train 1, 6, 7 controlled by internal friction induced in a secondary epicyclic train induced by a governor. Side gears 1, 7 are fast on driving and driven shafts 3, 17, respectively. The carrier 9 of planets 6 is geared to drive a governor 19. The gear 7 carries equal spur planets 23', 23 which mesh respectively with a sun gear 24 on the carrier 9 and with a loose sun gear 25. The gear 25 and its central connections thus cannot move relatively to carrier 9. The governor 19 acts through a helix, a central thrust sleeve, and levers, not shown, to turn a pair of small central bevels, so that the train 25, 23, 23<1>, 24 is stressed. The internal friction thus produced controls the speed of the driven shaft 17 automatically.
