Variable-speed epicyclic gearing with automatic change comprises two loose trains connected by and acting oppositely upon a loose central gear 15, the planet carriers 8, 21 of the two loose trains driving the driven shaft 30 through a balance-gear 16, 17, 27, 26. The interengaging planets 17. 27 of the balance gear are carried by the shaft 30. The driving-shaft 6 carries a long internally-toothed gear 4. One loose train comprises stepped planets 11, 12, the former meshing with gear 4 and the latter with idler 13, which in turn meshes with the loose gear 15. The other loose train comprises stepped planets 24, 25, the former meshing with the gear 4 and the latter with the gear 15. The carriers 8, 21 are connected to the gears 16, 26 respectively by loose sleeves 7, 20.
