Abstract

478,055. Change speed gearing. DERNIER, R. Sept. 7, 1937, No. 24407. [Class 80 (ii)] A two-speed gear suitable for cycles comprises stepped planet gears 7, 8, Fig. 1, in a sliding carrier 9 provided with clutch teeth which relieve the planet pinions from all transmission strains on direct drive. Inside the bottom bracket 4 is journalled the crank axle 1 with a long boss 2 loose upon it carrying the usual sprocket 3. The planets 7, 8 mesh with sun gears 5, 6 fast respectively upon the axle 1 and the boss 2. Fig. 1 shows the position for geared drive in which the carrier 9 is held against rotation by dogs 16 on its end face engaging dogs 17 on a fixed end cup 13. The carrier 9 has two internal sets of clutch dogs 15, 18, Fig. 4, in different planes, and during geared drive these are both disengaged and idle. When the carrier 9 is slid to the right of Fig. 1 as by turning a crank linkage 11, the dogs 18 and 15 slide simultaneously into engagement with the gear teeth of the sun gears 5, 6 so that all driving strains necessarily pass through the carrier 9 and not through the planets. As shown in Fig. 3, there are three individual dogs 15 and two segments of dogs 18. While a gearing-down form is shown, the invention can equally well be in a gearing-up arrangement.
