Abstract

Reversing-gearing; variable-speed gearing. - Toothed gearing which yields two widely different speeds in opposite direction is adapted as a two-speed gear by reversing the driving-shaft. This two-speed gear may be arranged in series with another change-speed gear so as to give a two-fold use of its range of speeds. It is specially applicable upon motor power plants of the traction type. A gear 13, Fig. 1, fast on the driving- shaft 14 of the two-speed gear meshes constantly with a wheel 6 loose on the driven shaft 2. It meshes also with an idler 10 meshing in turn with a pinion 7 loose on the shaft 2. A clutch member 3 fast on the shaft 2 has sets of teeth 4, 5 adapted to be engaged bv the teeth of the pinion 7 and by clutch teeth 9 upon the wheel 6, respectively. Change is effected by moving the gears 6, 7, 10 bodily from side to side. In a modification shown in Fig. 4, the driving-shaft 25 of the two-speed gear has loosely mounted upon it bevel wheels 32, 33 driven in opposite directions through another change-speed gear. A double gear 24 on feathers 26 on the shaft 25 is slid across between the wheels 32, 33.
