Variable-speed and reversing gearing suitable for motor-vehicles, comprises a driving-shaft d carrying a fixed pinion 5 constantly meshing with a wheel 5' secured to a countershaft a. Gears 1<1>, 2<1> slidably splined together on a driven shaft b may mesh respectively with gears 1, 2 secured to the shaft a for first or lowest and second speeds. A gear 3<1> splined on the shaft b may mesh with a gear 3 on the shaft a for the third speed or may be slid so that clutch teeth 4 upon it engage with teeth 4<1> on the pinion 5 for direct driving. The invention resides in the arrangement for reversed driving. A pair of gears 6, 6' slidable together loosely on a shaft c are for this purpose meshed with the gears 3, 1<1>.
