Abstract

3674. Stratton, F. F. Feb. 12. Variable-speed chain and toothed gearing for motor-vehicles of the kind having alined driving and driven shafts A, B and a parallel countershaft C is provided with a sliding clutch sleeve G splined on the shaft A and having two sets of teeth G<1>, G<2>. A gear-wheel E supported in exterior bearings surrounds the shaft A and gears with a wheel F fast on the countershaft C. A wheel K fast on the shaft C gears with a wheel J loose on the shaft B. The sleeve G is normally pressed to the left by a spring G<3> so that the teeth G<1> engage teeth E<2> inside the gear E. A countershaft drive then takes place when a clutch member H<2> engages a member J<1> on the gear J. The member H<2> is formed on a sleeve H<1> slidably splined on the shaft Band having a clutch member H<3> at its other end. When the sleeve H<1> is moved to the left, the member H<3> engages the member G<2>, as in the configuration shown, and the shaft B is driven directly. On moving the sleeve H' farther to the left, the sleeve G is carried along until the teeth G<1> move clear of the teeth E<2>. The shaft C and gears E, F, K, J then come to rest. When the gears E, F and K, J are chain-gears, reversed driving may be effected by sliding a toothed wheel H on the sleeve H<1> into mesh with a wheel I on the shaft C.
