Abstract

17,434. Craig, A. July 27. Variable speed toothed gearing.-Relates to variable-speed and reversing gearing of the sliding- gear type, specially suitable for motor-vehicles. When one gear is moved to change the speed, a separate idle gear is moved out of the way, allowing the gear-box to be shortened. The driving-shaft A and driven shaft F are in line, and there are two lay shafts K, N. Fig. 1 is diagrammatic. the shafts being arranged as shown in Fig. 2. The shaft F carries fast gears G, J constantly meshing respectively with gears G<2>, J<2>, fast on the shafts N, K. Slidably splined on the shaft A is a sleeve B carrying gears C, D and clutch jaws E capable of engaging jaws H carried by the shaft F. Slidable gears L, M are separately splined on the shaft K. For the lowest speed, the gears L, M are moved to the right. Power passes between the gears C, L and J<2>, J. For the second speed, the gears L, M are moved to the left. Power passes between the gears D, M and J<2>, J. The third speed, a direct drive, is obtained by moving the sleeve B to the right until the jaws E engage the jaws H. The gear M is simultaneously moved to the right out of the way of the gear D. The highest speed is obtained when the sleeve B is moved to the left until the gear D comes into mesh with a gear O fast on the shaft N. The gear L is simultaneously moved to the left out of the way of the gear C. Reversed driving is effected by sliding the gear L to the left until it meshes with an idler P<2>, which is loose on the shaft N and is constantly in mesh with a pinion P fast on the shaft A.
