Variable-speed and gearing, applicable to motorvehicles, comprises a driven shaft C and, a counterehaft E adapted to be moved longitudinally in unison to effect the speed changes. Clutch dogs C<2> formed on the shaft C are adapted to engage dogs A<8> upon a. driving-shaft A for direct driving, and alternatively dogs A<7> formed inside a set of loose gears A<3> - - A<6> for reduced speeds and reversed driving. A pinion A<2> fast on the shaft A drives a wheel D<2> having a feathered connexion with the shaft E. The gears A<3> &c. mesh with gears D<3> - - D<6> having internal dogs D<8> adapted to be .engaged by dogs E<3> formed on the shaft E. To facilitate changing speed, the dogs E<3> may be wider than the dogs C<2>. The shaft C may be used as driving-shaft. The loose gears are supported by overlapping flanges.
