Abstract

324,563. Fiat Soc. Anon. Nov. 2, 1928, [Convention date]. Variable-speed toothed gearing.-In four-speed gearing for automobiles, the third-speed drive passes from a pinion 6 on the driving-shaft 2 to an internal wheel 7 loose on a stationary support 14 entering between the wheel 7 and a coplanar pinion 9 integral therewith, which gears with an internal wheel 11 loose on the shaft 2 and connected by clutch parts 12a, 19 with a sleeve 19 splined to a drum 21 integral with the driven shaft 22. The clutch part 19 effects the direct drive by engagement with a clutch part 18 on a sleeve 18 keyed to the shaft 2. First and second speeds are obtained by sliding a double pinion 27, 29 on a lay-shaft 3, which is constantly driven by helical gearing 4, 5, into mesh with wheels 28 or 30 on the driven drum 21. The gear casing is formed in two parts 1, 1 provided with an end cover 36, and the support 14 is gripped between the parts 1, 1.
