Abstract
217,373. Taylor, F. D. G. April 12, 1923. Variable-speed and reversing gearing.-Expanding pulley gearing is combined with reversing- gearing of the kind which turns solid for direct driving. As applied to a motor-vehicle, the engine shaft 1 has a worm 4 driving a wheel 5 loose on an intermediate shaft 2. Fast to the wheel 5 are a bevel-gear 8 and a sleeve 28 with a sliding dog clutch member 6. Meshing with the gear 8 are planets 9 meshing also with an opposite gear 10 secured to the shaft 2. The planets 9 are supported in a loose spider 11, which has projecting arms 12 adapted to be engaged by a push rod 14, and so to be held against rotation, when the shaft 2 is to be driven reversely. For forward driving, the spindle 11 is free, and the clutch member 6 is engaged with a clutch member 7 fast on the shaft 2. The gearing turns solid but idle. The rod 14 and member 6 are operated by a pull-rod 17. The expanding pulley gear 3 is arranged between the shaft 2 and the back axle of the vehicle. This gearing is preferably constructed as described in Specifications 142,742 and 162,378.
