Abstract

295,835. Clark, A. B. Aug. 29, 1927. Variable-speed gearing comprises a stepped bevel epicyclic train, a variable clutch and aligned driving, intermediate, and driven shafts 3, 6, 2. Fast upon shaft 6 is the carrier 7 of planets 11, 10. The gears 11 mesh with a gear 5 fast on the shaft 3. The gears 10 mesh with a large gear 12 which is connected by a sleeve 14 with the drum 16 or outer member of an hydraulic or other variable-resistance clutch. The inner member or eccentric piston 17 of this clutch is fast on a sleeve 24 loose on the shaft 6. A double claw clutch 26 being splined at 32 to the shaft 2, may be engaged alternatively with a clutch end 25 of the sleeve 24 and clutch dogs 27 on the shaft 6. When the clutch 26 is engaged with sleeve 24, the shaft 2 is fast with piston 17. When then a sleeve 21 is moved to close ports 19, Fig. 3, the gearing rotates solid for the highest speed, since the gear 12 and carrier 7 are clutched together. When the sleeve 21 is moved to open the ports 19 partially, slipping takes place so that the drive may be gradually reduced to zero. On applying a brake 36 to carrier 7, the wheel 12 is driven reversely, and this through the variable clutch and clutch 26 drives shaft 2. In addition, a definite low forward speed is effected when the wheel 12 is held by brake 40 and the shaft 6 is connected to shaft 2 by the clutch 26 in the posi. tion shown in Fig. 1.
