Abstract

352,024. Variable-speed and reversing gearing. ROYCE, SIR F. H., Nightingale Road, Derby. April 2, 1930, No. 10432. [Class 80 (ii).] In motor vehicles, &c., a variable-speed gear, preferably of epicyclic type, is employed in series with an epicyclic gear giving either direct forward or reduced reverse drive, the driving-shaft of the reversing gear being clutchable either directly to the engine-driven shaft or to the driven shaft of the variable-speed gear. The engine-driven shaft b drives a hollow shaft d through a speed-gear e, for example of epicyclic type in which is not possible or desirable to provide a reverse drive. The shafts b, d carry clutch teeth b<1>, d<1> alternatively engageable by teeth f<2> on a sliding clutch sleeve f splined to a sun-wheel g, which drives the shaft c either directly by teeth c<4> on the drum c<3> or reversely through planet wheels h<3> when the planet-carrier h is braked and the clutch sleeve f is moved to the right. Thus the shaft c may receive each of the drives of the shafts b, d at full speed forwardly or at reduced speed reversely. According to the Provisional Specification, a coupling of the type in which the clutch members are held apart until their speeds of rotation are approximately equal may be incorporated in or with any one or more of the clutches.
