Abstract

433,627. Variable-speed and reversing gearing. CLOUDSLEY, J. L., 5, Chancery Lane, London. Feb. 17, 1934, No. 5325. Addition to 405,453. [Class 80 (ii)] In infinitely-variable friction gearing of the torus-disc type combined with planetary reversing - gearing, as claimed in the parent Specification, the output shaft 28 of the combined unit supports the entire reversing- gear which can be detached as a whole by removing nuts 40. The nuts 40 secure a casing 27 of the reversing-gear to a casing 41 of the disc gearing. The shaft 28 is supported near its outer end in a ball bearing 29 which takes the thrust of planet pinions 12 of the reversing-gear and also any thrust in, say, the cardan shaft of a vehicle, exerted upon a transmission flange 22. The shaft 28 is supported near its inner end within a sleeve 8 in a ball bearing 30 which takes the opposite thrust of the pinions 12. The sleeve 8, which communicates the drive from the disc gearing, is supported in turn in a roller bearing 52 in a web 53 of the casing 41. The sleeve 8 has a detachable splined connection 26 with the driven drum 6 of the disc gearing, and has also gear teeth 33 meshing with the pinions 12 which are supported in a spider comprising a hub 34 and an outer ring 35<1> connected by spindles 11. The pinions 12 mesh on the other side with a gear 37 splined on the shaft 28 and thrust supported by the bearing 29. The rear end of the disc gearing shaft 3 is supported on a bearing 51 on the forward end of the shaft 28, and a nut 42 takes end thrust. Change from forward to reversed driving is effected by sliding a sleeve 35 splined on the ring 351 from engagement with clutch teeth 46 on the gear 37 into engagement with fixed teeth 44. There are lubricating passages 47, 48, 49.
