Abstract

484,584. Mechanical and hydraulic variable-speed gear arrangements. KLEIN, SCHANZLIN, & BECKER AKT.-GES. Nov. 6, 1936, No. 30279. Convention date, Nov. 6, 1935. [Class 80 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] To obtain more favourable running conditions from hydraulic gearing H, (not described), particularly of the F÷ttinger type and including for instance one or more converters and one or more clutches, the gear H is driven from the engine M through a mechanical changespeed gear E which yields an overdrive for increasing the speed of the hydraulic gear above that of the engine. Graphs are given showing how it is possible to make the curve of tractive effort against running speed more nearly approach the ideal hyperbola by introducing the overdrive at normal running speed with the hydraulic gear in clutch operation. The driven device R is a vehicle axle. In Fig. 1, the mechanical change-speed gear E yields direct-drive through a clutch 1 and overdrive through a clutch 5. In Fig. 3 (not shown), both speeds are overdrives but of different value, driving and driven shafts being parallel. In Fig. 4 (not shown), an additional simple mechanical two-speed reduction and reversing gear is arranged between the output of the hydraulic gear H and the load K, the output shaft having a brake to facilitate change in the mechanical gear. Fig. 5 includes an allmechanical byepass for the hydraulic gear H and comprises a driving shaft 14 extended at 31 so as to provide means for driving the input 20 of the hydraulic gear from its rear end at a higher speed, through a clutch 32, wheels 24, 23 and clutch 33, than when it is driven from its forward end through a clutch 19 and wheels 17, 18. The output shaft 21 of the hydraulic gear passes a direct drive to the load K when a double clutch 29 on the shaft 21 is clutched to a fast wheel 27 on the load-shaft K, and passes a reduced or reversed drive thereto through the clutch 29, wheels 23, 24, countershaft 25 and wheels 26, 27, with or without a reverse idler 30. By clutching together the shaft 31 and countershaft 25 at 32, all the other clutches being disengaged, an all-mechanical reduced or reverse drive can be obtained through the wheels 26, 27 and idler 30. The output shaft 21 of the hydraulic gear has a brake B at its forward end to facilitate change in the mechanical gearing. A further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), includes two engines driving a common shaft through oneway clutches and bevel gearing, the shaft being connected through high- or low-speed bevel gearing to a hydraulic gear, driving the load. The mechanical change-speed gears may be planetary or frictional.
