Abstract

1356258 Variable-ratio gear TURNER MFG CO Ltd 21 July 1971 [28 July 1970] 36417/70 Heading F2D A countershaft four, or five (Fig. 3, not shown), forward ratio and one reverse gear comprises aligned input and output shafts 13, 22, which may be clutched together via a synchronizer sleeve 29 for direct drive (TOP), and a countershaft 44 driven at different speeds from the input shaft 13 through constant mesh gear pairs 41, 47; 26, 48 and 28, 46 controlled by a further synchronizer sleeve 49 and the synchronizer sleeve 29 respectively, the countershaft 44 being permanently connected to the output shaft 22 via a constant mesh gear pair 45, 39, the gears 47 and 48 being selectively clutched, via the synchronizer 49, to the layshaft 44 for 1st and 2nd ratios respectively and the gear 28 selectively clutched via the synchronizer 29 to the input shaft 13 for 3rd ratio, reverse being established by moving an idler (not shown) into mesh between a pinion 27, fast on the input shaft 13, and external teeth on the synchronizer sleeve 49. In Fig. 2 (not shown) a planetary two-speed direct/reducing splitter gear is provided in series between the main C.S.G. output shaft (58) and the final output shaft (64), the latter shaft (64) being fast with a carrier, the planets of which mesh a ring (61) fast with shaft (58) and a sun (63), a synchronizer (66) being provided to clutch the sun (63) to the carrier for solid lock-up drive through the planetary gear, or, brake the sun on the casing to act as a reducing splitter gear of the main C.S.G. ratios. In Fig. 3 (not shown) a five forward ratio and one reverse gear is shown which is similar to the four forward speed gear of Fig. 1 with the addition of a further meshing gear pair (73, 74) the latter of which may be selectively clutched to the input shaft (75) by a further synchronizer sleeve (76) for the additional gear ratio. A sleeve 15 slidably splined on the input shaft 13 and on an input shaft extension 16 accommodates any misalignment when the input shaft extension 16 is connected via the usual clutch (not shown) to a prime mover (not shown).
