An hydromechanical tractor transmission comprises a torque converter 1 whose output shaft 2 is coupled to a gear input shaft 3 carrying a pair of hydraulically operated disc clutches 7, 8 by which drive may be transmitted at different ratios through pinions 13, 15 and 14, 1C to a main shaft 17 which may be directly coupled by a three-position dog clutch 20 to an output shaft 21 driving the rear axle 32 through gears 29, 31, 33. A reduced ratio may be obtained with clutch 7 engaged tlnough an intermediate shaft 19 carrying a pinion 16 meshing with pinion 15 on main shaft 17 and a second pinion 23 meshing with a pinion 22 which may be locked to the output shaft 21 by clutch 20. The same number of reverse ratios are obtainable through a second pair of clutches similar to clutches 7, 8 mounted on a countershaft, Figs 3 and 4 (not shown), and connected to a pinion 4 on shaft 3. A power take-off shaft 28 may be clutched to intermediate shaft 19, and the latter may also be connected through pinions 24, 25 and a clutch 26 with a front wheel drive shaft 27.
