Abstract

A tractor transmission comprises a threeelement epicyclic gear unit 106 with constant and variable speed input shafts 80, 84 driven by an expanding-pulley gear 86, the epicyclic unit being controlled by high and low range friction clutches H, L coaxial with the variable speed shaft 84, the high range clutch H connecting the sun-wheel with the planet carrier or the ring gear of the epicyclic unit. As shown, the constant speed input shaft is in line with the main input shaft 80 and drives a pinion 102 integral with the range clutch unit through pinions 82, 100. The sun-wheel 108 is connected to the planet carrier 114 by the high range clutch H. The sleeve shaft 104 of the epicyclic unit drives the final output shaft 128 through a two-speed spur gear unit 129 operated by an axially movable clutch 136. In a modification, Fig. 1 (not shown), the epicyclic output shaft (42) drives the final output shaft 72 through spur gears (74, 76) of which the former is axially movable to break the drive. In a further arrangement, Fig. 6 (not shown), the main input shaft (142) drives the constant speed shaft (154) through pinions (146, 156) and the low range clutch through pinions (144, 168).
