Abstract

876,884. Transmitting mechanical power. AKERMAN, O., and AKERMAN, L. O. June 12, 1958, No. 18883/58. Class 38 (4). In a system comprising an input shaft 14 coupled to a sun-gear 11 of an epicyclic gear chain 10 with an output shaft 15 coupled to the planet carrier 13, and in which two similar electrically connected separately excited D.C. machines 17, 22 are respectively coupled to the input shaft and ring gear 12 respectively to effect speed variation, a clutch 30 is provided between the input shafts and sun carrier, and a brake 33 is provided on the latter, in order to give two speed ranges and reduce the size of the machines. The two speed ranges may give a continuous speed range from standstill, or may over or under lap. By reversing the field excitation of one machine a reverse speed range may be obtained. The ring gear 12 may alternatively, be connected to the output member of the clutch, the sun gear 11 to the machine 22 and the planet carrier 12 to the output shaft. The input shaft 14 may be driven at a variable speed such as in automobile practice, or at a constant speed from an induction motor. A number of epicyclic gear chains may be driven from a common clutch member by means of pairs of bevel gears, the individual machines 22 being connected to a common main machine 17. Another arrangement embraces the provision of a multi-ratio gear-box in place of the clutch and brake. Specification 711,064 is referred to.
