Abstract

581,534. Reversing gearing. DAVEY, PAXMAN, & CO., Ltd., and PAXMAN, E. P. Aug. 31, 1944, No. 16585. [Class 80 (ii)] In reverse gearing an engine crankshaft 3 may be alternatively coupled to concentric shafts 1, 2, by magnetic clutches 11, 12, or 11, 14, the clutch part 1-1 being fixed to the shaft 3 and the parts 12, 14, being arranged respectively around and within the part 11. The shafts 1, 2, enter a gear box 4 and are geared to an output shaft 25 so that the latter is driven forwardly or reversely according as to which clutch is engaged. As shown, the shaft 2 is connected to the shaft 25 by gears 19, 21, and a gear 18 on the shaft 1 is connected to a gear 20 on the shaft 25 through an idler gear. Electrical connection to the clutches is made by slip rings 27 round the shafts 1, 2. In a modification the gear train 18, 20, is omitted, and an epicyclic train is arranged between the shafts 1, 2. For forward driving the clutch 11, 12, is energized, the epicyclic gear running idly. For reverse driving the clutch 11, 14 is energized, the epicyclic train being made effective by holding the planet cage stationary by a magnetic brake.
