Abstract

[Also in Division F2] In a layshaft-type change-speed, gear providing five forward speeds including an overdrive, all with synchromesh, and a reverse, for a motor vehicle having a transverse power unit which incorporates, en bloc, engine, clutch, the change-speed gear, and a final-drive differential gear assembly 16 the ring gear 15 of which is driven by a final-drive pinion 9 on an output shaft 3, the fifth-speed overdrive gear 12 and its associated synchromesh clutch 13 are compactly carried coaxially with and at the end of the layshaft 10 and in constant mesh with the finaldrive pinion 9, the synchromesh clutch 13, when operated, serving to clutch the gear 12 to the layshaft 10 for overdrive. The change-speed gear is driven from the engine and clutch, not shown, through an input shaft 1, the three reduced, and direct, forward speeds being controlled by synchromesh clutches 5 and 6, the former serving to clutch gears 4 or 7 to the shaft 3 for first and second speeds and the latter, to clutch gear 8 or the input shaft 1, via teeth 14, to the shaft 3 for third and direct drive. An idler gear 19 slidable into mesh with a layshaft gear 20 provides reverse.
