964,968. Change-speed gear. DAVID BROWN TRACTORS Ltd. Feb. 1, 1962 [Jan. 25, 1961], No. 2859/61. Heading F2D. In a three forward-speed epicyclic gear in series with a two forward and one reverse speed change speed gear for a motor vehicle, wherein stepped planets 39, 40 on a carrier 38 respectively mesh a sun 18 and a sun 41 fast on an epicyclic gear output shaft 43, epicyclic gear low is by clutching, at 31, the carrier to an input shaft 10 and braking, at 49, the sun 18 epicyclic gear second is by clutching, at 24, the sun 18 to the input shaft, the carrier being held from reverse rotation by a one-way roller detent 53; and epicyclic gear high is by clutching both the carrier and the sun 18 to the input shaft for solid 1/1 drive. The clutches 31, 24 and the brake 49 are of the multi-plate friction type fluid pressure engaged and spring disengaged. A one-way roller clutch 55 between the carrier and the input shaft prevents carrier speed from exceeding input speed when descending a hill in second, and, together with a further one-way roller clutch 54 between the sun 18 and the input shaft, permits towed starting or, in the event of hydraulic failure, engine braking during hill descent. The following change speed gear comprises forward speed gears 57, 58 fast on the shaft 43 and respectively meshing gears 60, 61 selectively connectible to a lay shaft 67 by a double sliding dog clutch 70, and reverse gears 56, 74 fast on the shafts 43, 67 and a sliding idler (not shown). The lay shaft is connected to a final drive bevel pinion shaft 81 through gears 75, 76. A power take-off shaft 82 extending through the lay shaft 67 may be selectively driven at two speeds, even when the pinion shaft 81 is not being driven, by gears 87, 88 selectively connectible thereto by a double sliding dog-clutch 94 and meshing gears 90, 100 fast on the input shaft 10.
