Abstract
994,662. Change speed gear. FRANCAISE DU FERODO S.A. Sept. 14, 1961 [Sept. 14, 1960], No. 33053/61. Heading F2D. A change-speed planet gear for a motor vehicle providing three forward ratios and reverse comprises intermeshed planets 28, 29 which mesh an input element 24, a sun 25 which is held by a brake 3 for first and second ratios and a ring gear 26, which ring gear 26 and a planet carrier 27 are selectively clutched to an output shaft 2. As shown, the planets 28 mesh a sun 24 fast with a shaft 1, driven from an input shaft 13 either through a torque converter H and one-way clutch 21 or through a by-pass clutch 20 in which case the one-way clutch 21 overruns. The planets 29 mesh the sun 25 and a ring gear 26 which is connected through a friction clutch 5 and a dog clutch 9, 10 to the output shaft 2 for second ratio and is held by engaging the clutch 5 and a positive brake 11, 12 for reverse. The planet carrier 27 is clutched at 8 to the output shaft for first and reverse ratios. For direct drive the sun 25 is clutched at 22 to the torque converter turbine 15 and either the clutch 5 or clutch 8 or both is/are engaged. The clutch 20 may be disengaged in all ratios for fluid drive. The clutch 20 which may be engaged automatically in the absence of "kickdown" when the torque converter reactor 17 rotates forwardly and when the vehicle speed exceeds 10 km/h drives the shaft 1 directly to provide all mechanical first and second ratios and a split torque direct drive when either the clutch 5 or clutch 8 is engaged with the clutch 22. The control for the clutch 20 may include a valve controlled by the auxiliary torque of the reactor. In Figs. 4-6 (not shown), the clutch 20, shaft 16 and clutch 22 are omitted and the turbine 15 of the torque converter is connected directly to the shaft 1. In Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), the ring gear 26 may be clutched directly to the output shaft whilst the planet carrier is clutched thereto through the clutches 5, 9, 10 or held at 11, 12. In Fig. 6 (not shown), the input element is a ring gear.
